Is Kalshi Legal in the UK?
Prediction markets have exploded in popularity in recent years, allowing users to trade on everything from elections and interest rates to sporting events and entertainment awards.
One of the biggest names in this growing industry is Kalshi, a US-based platform offering event contracts based on whether a particular outcome will happen.
However, British users searching for “Is Kalshi legal in the UK?” need to be aware that its American regulatory status does not automatically make it available here.
At present, UK residents are not permitted to trade Kalshi’s event contracts.
Kalshi’s own Member Agreement lists the United Kingdom as a restricted jurisdiction, while the UK Gambling Commission has warned that prediction-market operators generally require an appropriate British gambling licence before transacting with customers in Great Britain.
Here is what you need to know.
What Is Kalshi?
Kalshi is an online prediction market on which users buy and sell contracts linked to the outcome of future events.
Most markets are framed as straightforward “Yes” or “No” questions. For example, users might trade on whether:
- A political candidate will win an election
- An economic figure will exceed a certain level
- A sports team will win a match
- A city will record a particular temperature
- A film will win an award
Contracts are normally priced between $0.01 and $0.99. The price can be viewed as an indication of the market’s estimated probability.
A “Yes” contract priced at $0.65, for instance, suggests that traders collectively believe the outcome has roughly a 65% chance of occurring.
A winning contract settles at $1, while a losing contract becomes worthless.
Unlike a traditional bookmaker, Kalshi presents itself as a financial exchange rather than a betting site.
It is regulated in the United States by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, or CFTC, as a Designated Contract Market.
That distinction is important in America, but British regulators take a different view.
Can You Use Kalshi in the UK?
You cannot currently trade Kalshi event contracts while domiciled, based or located in the United Kingdom.
Kalshi opened its platform to users in a number of countries during 2026. Its help centre explains that international users may be able to register, subject to identity checks, country restrictions and the terms of its Member Agreement.
However, the United Kingdom appears on Kalshi’s list of restricted jurisdictions. The agreement states that anyone domiciled in, organised in or located in the UK is prohibited from trading event contracts on the platform.
The wording is wider than simply checking where you live. It covers your location at the time of trading as well as where you are legally resident or established.
Kalshi’s terms suggest that someone in a restricted jurisdiction may still be able to maintain an account, view the platform or access products other than event contracts, where permitted.
Nevertheless, this does not amount to permission for a UK customer to trade the prediction markets for which Kalshi is best known.
Using a VPN to avoid the location restriction would not change your legal position and could breach Kalshi’s terms, potentially leading to account restrictions or difficulties withdrawing money.
Is Kalshi Licensed in the UK?
Kalshi’s US licence does not authorise it to offer gambling or financial products to British retail customers.
In February 2026, the UK Gambling Commission published a clear statement on prediction markets.
It said that, depending on the precise business model, existing prediction-market platforms would appear to meet the definition of a betting intermediary under British gambling law.
In practical terms, the Commission considers these platforms similar to betting exchanges.
Users may trade with one another rather than betting directly against the operator, but the underlying activity still resembles betting on the outcome of an event.
The Commission stated that prediction-market operators without a British licence should ensure they are neither targeting nor transacting with consumers in Great Britain.
Operating without the appropriate licence can amount to a criminal offence.
We could not find Kalshi listed as a UK-licensed betting intermediary. That aligns with its decision to restrict customers in the United Kingdom.
Is Kalshi Regulated by the FCA?
Some confusion arises because Kalshi is regulated as a derivatives exchange in America.
It is therefore tempting to assume that the Financial Conduct Authority would regulate it as an investment platform in Britain.
The position depends on the subject of the contract.
According to the FCA, prediction products connected to non-financial events, such as political or sporting results, normally fall within the Gambling Commission’s remit.
Products linked to financial or certain climatic events may instead fall within the FCA’s regulatory perimeter.
The problem for operators is that the FCA currently regards the financial prediction products it has examined as binary options.
The sale of binary options to UK retail consumers has been permanently banned since 2019 because of their highly speculative nature and the risk of consumer harm.
This creates a difficult regulatory environment for a platform offering both financial and non-financial event markets. Calling a contract a “trade” rather than a “bet” does not remove it from UK regulation.
Is It Illegal for a UK Customer to Visit Kalshi?
Simply visiting Kalshi’s website, reading its markets or using publicly available prices as a source of information is not the same as placing a real-money trade.
The key restriction concerns trading event contracts.
Kalshi’s prices can still be useful for research. Prediction markets sometimes provide a quick snapshot of public expectations surrounding elections, economics and major events. However, prices are opinions produced by traders rather than guaranteed forecasts.
UK users should not deposit money or attempt to trade unless Kalshi changes its eligibility rules and obtains whatever British permissions are required.
What Are the UK Alternatives to Kalshi?
British customers already have access to licensed betting exchanges and bookmakers offering markets on sport, politics, entertainment and other events.
A UK-licensed betting exchange is the closest equivalent to Kalshi’s peer-to-peer model.
Customers can back an outcome or take the opposite side by laying it, with prices determined by activity in the market.
The range of novelty and economic markets may not be identical, but using a Gambling Commission-licensed operator provides important protections, including rules covering customer funds, identity checks, safer gambling and complaints.
Always check the Gambling Commission’s public register before depositing with an unfamiliar operator.
Final Verdict: Is Kalshi Legal in the UK?
Kalshi is a legitimate, federally regulated prediction exchange in the United States, but that does not mean UK residents can use it.
As things stand, UK-based customers are prohibited by Kalshi’s Member Agreement from trading its event contracts.
The UK Gambling Commission also believes prediction markets operating here would generally require a betting-intermediary licence, while some financial event contracts could fall under the FCA’s ban on retail binary options.
You can browse Kalshi and follow its market prices, but you should not attempt to bypass its country restrictions or trade with real money from the UK.
The regulatory position could change as prediction markets develop.
For now, however, the answer is clear: Kalshi is not legally available as a real-money prediction market for UK customers.
