Double Bubble Floats Back to the Top: What’s Behind the Resurgence of the 2006 Classic?

There’s a distinct trend across gambling to attempt to find a kind of mathematical solution to find the best ways to bet.

Like with basic strategy in blackjack, many think there’s an optimal angle. It’s why the collection of winning betting systems is popular, but it’s not just in sports betting where this is the case.

In online slots, where every outcome is wholly randomized regardless of the recency of the last payout, players seek out those top-paying games.

Many simply refer to the most popular games, trusting the crowd to have likely landed on the best picks. So, when a rather old game floats to the top, it gets noticed.

This is the case with Double Bubble. Released two decades ago, it’s very old by online slot standards, and yet, that’s part of its big selling point.

Released at a Distinct Turning Point

Double Bubble came out in 2006. This was a significant year for entertainment, best described in the World of Reel look back at the cinematic slate of the day.

Here, it was described as the intersection between the age of analog on the way out and the rapid growth of digital.

It was a year of The Departed, The Last King of Scotland, Children of Men, Pan’s Labyrinth, and Casino Royale.

Online slot gaming was still relatively young, with developers looking to first emulate fruit machines and now begin to explore the range available in this new digital space. Titans of slot machines, like IGT, were very prominent.

Even so, a few developers looking to breakthrough were actively pushing the limits of the tech now established for use. One such developer was Roxor Gaming.

They created the brightly colored, soap bubble-themed Double Bubble to introduce what were new mechanics in its day.

While used as a regular wild symbol, to substitute for other base game symbols, it’s also a paying wild and the key to the hefty 20,000x top prize.

Then, there’s the Bubble Line Multiplier. Some symbols are encased in a bubble, and when they do, they float over to the Bubble Line. If this makes a win, it’ll get a multiplier of up to 22x.

A Potent Slot that’s Novel in the Modern Space

Online slots have developed tremendously over the last 20 years. The sheer level of interest has warranted more and more studios jumping in to see if their ideas will stick.

Now, several new games are released every week, pushing up that level of competition while they all try to find the best combinations of theme, mechanics, and payouts.

To put that into context, the game that originated the now ever-popular fishing feature, Fishin’ Frenzy, was released in 2013, and it wasn’t until a 2020 slot came along that the feature was popularized.

Equally, Megaways was invented in 2016, and by 2021, it’d become so popular that Evolution Gaming paid €450 million to get the studio.

Amidst this race to the top and exploration of zany new mechanics within the digital space, Double Bubble has become somewhat of a novelty.

It has what pioneering features were and what’s still a high maximum win, but it’s all very straightforward. Some modern mechanics overcomplicate things, even if they’re very creative and potent.

Double Bubble has risen back up after decades since its release because it nails the fundamentals and makes the gameplay accessible.

New developments and mechanics in slots have their place, but the classics will continue to appeal as reliable go-to games.
