The long wait is finally over! Yes Euro 2020 (or Euro 2021, depending on what you prefer to call it) kicks off today after being delayed by a year due to covid.
It is set to be a thrilling tournament, with an expanded format of 24 teams and multiple venues being used across Europe. Wembley will be the host for the semi-finals and final, which could be good news for England – if they get that far that is…
It will be a feast of football over the next four weeks with up to three games a day to enjoy during the group stages. The action gets underway tonight with Italy v Turkey in Rome, which should be an interesting encounter. Turkey are many people’s dark horses for the tournament whilst Italy are on a 27 match unbeaten run.
In terms of the outright betting, world champions France are favourites at 9/2 and have an impressive array of talent to call on including Mbappe, Kante, Pogba and Griezmann.
England and Belgium are joint second favourites at around 6/1 and it is then very tight in the betting with four sides priced at around 8/1.
Clearly it is a very open tournament this time round with the bookies struggling to separate a lot of the teams. Add to this the difficulty of predicting who will come out of the “Group of Death” in Group F involving France, Germany and Portugal and it becomes an even trickier conundrum to solve.
